The abortion pill, mifepristone, is safe for now
On June 13, 2024, the US Supreme Court decided that mifepristone will remain available by mail.
On June 13, 2024, the US Supreme Court decided that mifepristone will remain available by mail.
The court stated that the anti- abortion rights doctors who brought the case have no standing. Imagine if the court would have decided otherwise: vaccines and any medication could be taken of the market just because some doctors don't believe in it and it would have taken away the delegated authority of the FDA to judge if medicines are safe and effective to use. So it was not really a decision supportive of abortion -rights. There was just no other justifiable decision.
Even though Aid Access had already decided it would continue providing telemedical abortions by mail, the Supreme Court decision has made that easier.
The question that remains open in this decision is who would have standing to bring the court case. Women who need abortions are the only ones that really have standing and they will certainly not file a case to ban the abortion pill, mifepristone.
